🏰 Norman Arrival
The Russell name is believed to have arrived in Scotland with Norman knights, possibly from the region of Rosel near Cherbourg. One such figure, Baron Rozel, fought at the Siege of Berwick and the Battle of Halidon Hill in 1333, later settling in Aberdeenshire.
📜 Early Scottish Records
- Walter Russell witnessed a charter to Paisley Abbey (1164–1177).
- John, son of Robert Russell of Duncanlaw, granted lands to the Hospital of Soltre (1180–1220).
- Robert Russell appeared in the Ragman Rolls of 1296, pledging allegiance to Edward I.

Clan Russell is armigerous, with no current chief. Its historic seat was Aden in Aberdeenshire. The clan motto is Virtus sine macula—“Virtue without a stain.”
